Cheap removals: 15 real money-saving tips
"Can you move on a tight budget without anything getting broken?" is a legitimate question if you are working with limited funds: students, first time living independently, separation, retirement on a reduced income. The answer is yes — there are real ways to cut your removal costs by 40–60% without compromising the safety of your belongings. This guide compiles 15 proven techniques for low-cost removals.
The 5 golden rules of a budget removal
- Reduce volume BEFORE requesting quotes (what you don't transport is your biggest saving)
- Choose the date wisely (low season, Tuesday to Thursday, plan ahead)
- Pack yourself (saves 200–600 €)
- Compare at least 3 fixed written quotes from reputable companies
- Share when you can (shared container, joint removal with someone else)
Specific money-saving techniques
1. Sell, give away and donate what you don't use
Every box you do NOT move saves you 15–25 € on your bill. Before the removal:
- Wallapop / Vinted / Milanuncios: clothes, furniture, electronics you don't use → recover 200–800 € + reduce volume
- Cáritas, Cruz Roja, local charities: good-condition clothing, books, small appliances
- Recycling centre or container: paper, cardboard, what is genuinely disposable
An average removal can be reduced by 20–30% in volume with a good clear-out beforehand. More at: Marie Kondo applied to removals.
2. Choose low season
Removals in November, January or February are up to 25% cheaper than in July–August. If your schedule is flexible, avoid June–September (peak season), Easter and December (year-end periods).
More detail at: summer or winter removal.
3. DIY packing: free boxes work perfectly well
Packing materials cost 80–150 € for an average removal. How to get them free or cheaply:
- Free sturdy boxes: ask at Mercadona, Lidl or Carrefour on Monday mornings (they will give them to you)
- Free boxes via classified ads: on Wallapop people often give away barely-used removal boxes
- Old newspapers and magazines: as cushioning inside boxes
- Old clothes and blankets: to protect glassware and delicate furniture
- Reused zip-loc bags: for screws, cables and small parts
4. Compare at least 3 quotes
The difference between the most expensive and least expensive quotes from reputable companies can be 30–40% without the service differing substantially. Request fixed written quotes (not verbal estimates) and compare them item by item. Be wary of the cheapest if it is 50%+ below the others: services are probably missing, there may be no insurance, or they may not show up on the day.
5. Use a shared removal (groupage)
If your volume is low (under 15 m³), a shared container is the most cost-effective option: you pay only for the space you use, not the whole container. For removals to the Canary Islands the saving can be up to 1,500 €. More info: groupage vs. exclusive container.
6. Move mid-week (Tuesday to Thursday)
Weekend removals cost 10–20% more because of overtime for the crew. If you can take a Wednesday off work, you save 100–300 €.
7. Disassemble easy furniture yourself
Professional disassembly of all furniture costs 80–150 €. If you disassemble the simpler pieces yourself the night before (tables, IKEA wardrobes, shelving units) and bag the screws in labelled bags, you save that amount. For complex pieces (fitted wardrobes, pianos, professional desks) a professional service is worthwhile.
8. Use the move as a chance to "sell" your large furniture at the destination
If you are moving to a smaller flat, transporting a 3-seater sofa you won't have room for costs 80–150 € in transport, only for you to then sell it on Wallapop for 100 €. Better: sell it BEFORE at the origin and buy one suited to the new flat at the destination.
9. University or work-related removal: take advantage of tax reliefs
If the move is due to a job change, any allowances your employer pays are exempt from IRPF: effectively free from a tax perspective. If you are self-employed and the move relates to the business, 100% deductible. Details: work-related removals.
10. Moving to the Canary Islands: use the AIEM exemption
If you are moving to the Canary Islands as a change of primary residence, used household goods are exempt from the Canarian duty (AIEM). Saving of 200–600 € on the value of your load. Requirements at the Canarian tax regime.
11. Ask friends to help with packing, not with carrying
Packing 80 boxes from your home with 2 friends over a weekend: feasible. Loading heavy furniture and driving a van without a licence or experience: unsafe and usually more expensive than hiring professionals (petrol, van hire, food for friends, potential damage with no insurance).
12. Buy materials in a pack, not individually
A standard removal pack of 30 boxes + tape + paper: ~50–70 €. Buying individually: 100 € or more. Some companies (including Horizont) offer economical packs when you book the service.
13. Only insure what YOU CANNOT REPLACE
The basic liability insurance covers virtually everything. Declared-value insurance (1–2% of the value) is only worth it for: works of art, antiques worth over 2,000 €, professional musical instruments, high-value jewellery. If you have none of those, basic liability cover is sufficient.
14. Book 4 weeks in advance
Urgent removals (less than 1 week's notice) carry a 15–30% surcharge. Booking with time gives you the best rates and maximum flexibility.
15. Take advantage of referral codes or promotions
Many companies (Horizont included) have referral programmes: if you come recommended by an existing client, you get a 5–10% discount. Ask before accepting a quote whether any current promotions apply.
Comparison: standard price vs. optimised price
Real example: removal from Madrid to Tenerife, average flat (25 m³):
- Without optimisation (summer, exclusive container, packing included, no clear-out): 3,500–4,200 €
- With optimisation (November, groupage container, self-packing, 30% volume reduction): 1,700–2,200 €
Real saving: 1,500–2,000 € by applying the techniques in this guide.
Frequently asked questions about low-cost removals
Is it safe to hire a "cheap" company?
It depends what you mean by cheap. A company with a lower price due to low season, route optimisation or a small volume is legitimately inexpensive. A company that is far below the market average without documentation, insurance or a transport licence is risky. Always verify: valid transport licence, liability insurance, formal invoice. More at: how to choose a company.
Can I do the whole removal myself with a van?
Only for very small removals (a studio or a room in a shared flat). For a full flat NOT recommended: van hire + petrol + food for friends + time + risk of damage with no insurance usually ends up costing as much as a professional company, with a worse result. More at: can I transport furniture in a van?.
Are there public grants for removals?
Generally there are no specific grants for "removals", but there are: regional grants for young people leaving home for the first time, grants for elderly people moving to a care home, grants for people with disabilities. Consult the social services of your destination municipality.
Is it worth starting to pack a month in advance?
Yes. Packing 1 box a day for 30 days is far more manageable than 40 boxes in one weekend. Start with rooms you use least (storage, pantry, library) and finish with the kitchen and bedrooms a few days before.
Better to use groupage or wait until you have a complete removal?
If you are in a hurry and your volume is small (<15 m³), groupage is the best value for money. If you can wait 2–4 weeks and your volume is medium to high, a fixed-date exclusive container is better. It depends on your priority: money or time.
Is it worth doing the removal myself and just hiring assembly at the destination?
This hybrid approach works if you already have many items disassembled or nothing too heavy. You hire a van, move with friends, and book just 3–4 hours of professional labour for assembling large furniture at destination. Saving: 30–50% over a full removal. Risk: damage from amateur handling, no insurance.
