Moving from the Canary Islands to the Netherlands is a long-haul international removal that combines sea freight, customs clearance and door-to-door coordination. At Horizont Atlantic we have spent more than 15 years organising OUTBOUND international removals from the Canary Islands to every corner of Europe, with our own base in Tenerife (El Mayorazgo) and an office in Las Palmas. We know every stage first-hand: assessing the volume, export packing, choosing the right container, customs clearance, and delivery, unpacking and reassembly at destination. It is a move that is entirely manageable when you plan ahead and rely on a company that handles it day in, day out.
What is the route and how long does it take?
The backbone of almost every removal from the Canary Islands to the Netherlands is container sea freight. Your belongings are packed and consolidated in the Canary Islands, loaded into a container and shipped by sea from the ports of Santa Cruz de Tenerife or Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to the Port of Rotterdam, the largest in Europe and the country's natural gateway. From there, the final leg is completed by road to the delivery address, whether that is Amsterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Eindhoven or anywhere else.
The indicative transit time is several weeks, and it depends on factors such as how often the shipping lines sail, whether you travel in a dedicated container or as part of a shared load, and the customs clearance times at both origin and destination. For urgent shipments or small volumes there is the air freight option, much faster but also more expensive, which we reserve for specific cases: essential paperwork, professional equipment or items you need to have available straight away. Our advice is simple: the sooner you tell us your target date, the better we can match the sailing to your real timescales.
Customs and paperwork: what you need to know
Here it pays to be clear and straight with you, because this is the part that raises the most questions. Although the Netherlands is part of the European Union, the Canary Islands sit outside the EU customs union and the EU VAT territory: they are a special territory with their own indirect taxation (IGIC). This means that, as far as goods are concerned, your removal does not travel as a simple domestic shipment within the EU, but instead goes through export clearance in the Canary Islands and import clearance in the Netherlands.
The good news is that we take care of the entire customs process. We prepare the required paperwork, draw up a valued inventory of your belongings and handle the clearance at both ends. In many cases, the used personal effects of someone relocating their residence may qualify for the specific reliefs provided for household removals, but we do not make up figures or promise you particular exemptions: every situation depends on your personal circumstances and the rules in force. What we do guarantee is transparent advice and handling all the formalities for you, so that you never have to deal with forms or customs agents yourself.
- Detailed inventory of everything being shipped, the basis of the clearance.
- Export documentation at the Canary port of departure.
- Import documentation on arrival in the Netherlands.
- Advice on household-goods requirements and items that need special handling.
Transport options: shared load, dedicated container and air freight
Not every removal calls for the same solution, which is why we work with three options that we choose together with you according to volume, budget and urgency.
Shared sea freight. Your belongings share a container with those of other clients also heading for northern Europe. It is the most economical option and ideal for small or medium-sized removals, such as a flat or an apartment without bulky furniture. In return, timescales can be a little longer, because the container sails once the load is consolidated.
Dedicated container. A full container (20 or 40 foot) reserved solely for you. It is the natural choice for whole homes, families or large volumes, and it gives you more control over timings and fewer intermediate handling steps. It tends to be faster than a shared load precisely because it does not wait for other cargo.
Air freight. Reserved for urgent cases or small shipments where time matters more than cost. Ideal for sending on the essentials ahead while the rest of the removal travels by sea.
Within a single removal we can combine options: for example, sending a case of essential items by air and the bulk of the home by sea. We help you strike the right balance between cost and speed.
Who it is for: the Dutch community in the Canary Islands
Many of those who hire us for this route are Dutch nationals living in the Canary Islands who decide to return to the Netherlands or relocate for family, work or retirement reasons. It is a well-established community, especially in the south of Gran Canaria —areas such as Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés, San Agustín, Meloneras and Mogán— and in the south of Tenerife —Adeje, Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, Arona and San Miguel—, where we have been carrying out collections for years.
We understand this profile's needs well: these are often furnished second homes, personal collections, furniture acquired over years of island life and, at times, the need to coordinate the move remotely because the client is no longer in the Canary Islands when the time comes to pack. We adapt to all of this: we can arrange the collection without you needing to be present, keep clear communication at every stage and coordinate delivery at your new Dutch address, with unpacking and reassembly included.
Services we include from start to finish
Our offer is a turnkey removal, so that all you have to think about is your new life in the Netherlands:
- Volume assessment in person or by video call, with a clear quote and no surprises.
- Professional export packing: hard-wearing materials prepared for long-distance sea freight, furniture protection, packing of fragile items and dismantling.
- Choice of option: dedicated container, shared load or air freight to suit your case.
- Customs handled at origin and destination, with all the paperwork processed by us.
- All-risk goods insurance so you can travel with peace of mind.
- Delivery, unpacking and reassembly at your destination address.
- Bridging storage in the Canary Islands if you need to store your belongings before departure or coordinate dates between selling your home and shipping.
With our own base in Tenerife and an office in Las Palmas, we directly control the Canary phase of the removal —the most delicate, given the packing and export clearance— and we work with trusted correspondents at destination so that delivery in the Netherlands is looked after just as carefully. Ask us for a no-obligation assessment and we will prepare a quote tailored to your volume, your timescales and the option that suits you best.

The bulk of the removal travels by sea in a container from the ports of Tenerife or Las Palmas to Rotterdam, with an indicative transit time of several weeks. The exact timescale depends on how often the shipping lines sail, whether you travel in a dedicated container or a shared load, and the customs clearance times. For urgent cases we offer an air freight option, which is much faster. The sooner you tell us your target date, the better we can match the sailing to your timescales.
The price is calculated mainly on the volume to be shipped (cubic metres), the option chosen (shared load, dedicated container or air freight), the level of packing needed, the access at origin and destination, and added services such as storage or unpacking and reassembly. That is why we carry out a prior assessment, in person or by video call, and give you a fixed, transparent quote. We do not give blanket figures because every removal is different.
Yes. Although the Netherlands belongs to the European Union, the Canary Islands sit outside the EU customs union and EU VAT, so the removal goes through export clearance in the Canary Islands and import clearance at destination. We handle all the paperwork and formalities for you. Used personal effects usually qualify for specific reliefs for household removals, but each case depends on your circumstances; we advise you transparently and without inventing exemptions.
A shared load shares a container with other cargo and is the most economical option, ideal for small or medium volumes; in return, timescales can be a little longer because it waits for the load to be consolidated. A dedicated container is a full container just for you, recommended for whole homes or large volumes, with more control over timings and less handling. During the assessment we advise you on the best option for your volume, budget and urgency.
Yes. We offer goods insurance for your belongings throughout the removal. We draw up a valued inventory that serves both for the cover and for customs clearance, and we explain the terms so you can travel with complete peace of mind. Professional export packing, such as the packing we carry out, is also the best protection against mishaps on a long-distance sea journey.
Yes, it is a very common situation among the Dutch community who have already returned or who manage a second home. We can coordinate the collection, packing and export clearance without you needing to be on the island, keeping clear communication at every stage and organising the delivery, unpacking and reassembly at your new address in the Netherlands. If you need to bridge a gap between dates, we have bridging storage available in the Canary Islands.
