Removals to El Hierro from mainland Spain
Sea freight with a connection from Tenerife to the Port of La Estaca and door-to-door delivery in Valverde, Frontera and El Pinar.
REQUEST A QUOTEA removal to El Hierro from mainland Spain is the longest route in the archipelago and the one that demands the most planning, because the island has no direct sea line with the mainland: freight always arrives via a connection from Tenerife to the Port of La Estaca, with limited frequencies. That is not a problem if it is organised in advance, and this is where working with a company whose own base is in Tenerife — exactly where the transhipment happens — pays off. At Horizont Atlantic we have been running this operation for more than 15 years and we quote a fixed price with the connection already included.
How your removal reaches El Hierro
The move has three stages. First we collect and pack at your mainland address and take the load to the port of departure: Cadiz (around 5 days at sea), Valencia (around 6) or Barcelona (around 7); from inland origins such as Madrid or Zaragoza the whole journey comes to around 9 days. Then our team receives the shipment in Tenerife and prepares it for the connection to the Port of La Estaca, in Valverde. Finally, we distribute across the island. The frequencies of that connection are lower than to other islands, so the prudent approach is to allow 3 to 4 weeks from signing and to book with margin, especially in summer.
Which cities we depart from for El Hierro
We collect door to door anywhere in mainland Spain, whether you live in a provincial capital or a small town. For El Hierro we do not publish pages by city of origin because the volume does not justify it, but the operation is exactly the same as for the other destinations: the overland leg takes you to whichever port best fits your date — Cadiz, Valencia or Barcelona — and from there the circuit is common. If you want the detail of how we handle each mainland origin, it is explained in the removals to the Canary Islands hub.
Groupage, the natural option
For El Hierro we recommend groupage in virtually every case. The island has fewer than 12,000 inhabitants and the sea connection has a limited number of slots for heavy vehicles: an exclusive 40-foot container is hard to fit and sends the cost up without offering any real advantage in timing. With groupage you pay only for the volume you occupy and your load travels on the first available connection. If you are moving a complete house we can still arrange it exclusively, but we will say so plainly: the date will depend on the ship's availability, not on us.
Where we deliver in El Hierro
We cover the island's three municipalities: Valverde (with the port of La Estaca and the village of Tamaduste), La Frontera — the El Golfo valley, Tigaday, Las Puntas and Sabinosa — and El Pinar, with La Restinga in the south. The terrain is the most demanding in the archipelago: from La Estaca to El Golfo an enormous height difference is covered in very few kilometres, on roads with continuous bends and stretches of sharp gradient. We carry out all island distribution with a small vehicle and a compact crew, the only way to reach inland houses or properties with uphill access reliably. It is factored into the quote; it is not an extra that appears at unloading.
Customs declaration and change-of-residence relief
The DUA is compulsory to clear goods in the Canaries and we handle it. If the move is due to a change of residence, used household effects are exempt from IGIC and AIEM under the change-of-address relief: you must evidence your previous registered address outside the Canaries, register in El Hierro and submit a valued inventory. On a small island, having the paperwork closed before shipping matters even more: a clearance issue is not resolved by the next sailing that day, but by the one next week.
What the service includes
We include reinforced sea-freight packing, dismantling and reassembly of furniture, bridging storage in Tenerife — key on this route so you do not depend on the ship and your keys lining up — insurance on the declared value and the option of bringing your car in the same shipment. On the car we will be frank: in El Hierro there is no reasonable public transport alternative between municipalities, so bringing yours within the removal is both the sensible and the cheapest choice.
How much a removal to El Hierro costs
You pay by actual volume. An average flat of around 25 m³ in groupage from the mainland falls into an indicative range of €2,500 to €3,500, the highest in the archipelago. The reason is purely logistical and we set it out without evasion: two sea hops, limited frequencies on the connection and island distribution that requires a small vehicle and more crew hours. All of that is included in the fixed quote you receive within 24-48 hours: we do not invoice the connection or the final mile as later surcharges.
If you already live in the Canaries
This page covers moves from mainland Spain to El Hierro. If you are coming from another island — almost always Tenerife — the right service is inter-island removals, with the same sea connection but without the mainland leg. And if you want to compare the rest of the destinations in the archipelago, the starting point is the removals to the Canary Islands hub.
Removals to the rest of the archipelago
If your destination is not El Hierro, we have a dedicated page for every island with its ports, transit times and delivery areas: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma and La Gomera.

It is the longest route in the archipelago. To the mainland transit — 5 days from Cadiz, 6 from Valencia, 7 from Barcelona or 9 in total from inland — you have to add the connection from Tenerife to the Port of La Estaca, with more limited frequencies than to other islands. The prudent approach is to allow 3 to 4 weeks from signing and to book with margin, especially in summer.

No. Freight always arrives via the connection from Tenerife to the Port of La Estaca. For you that means two things: you need to book further in advance, and it helps if whoever organises the removal has a real presence in Tenerife. Our base is there, so the transhipment is supervised by our own team and the load does not change hands.
Yes, we cover all three municipalities: Valverde (including Tamaduste), La Frontera — Tigaday, Las Puntas, Sabinosa and the El Golfo valley — and El Pinar, with La Restinga. These are destinations with very sharp height differences and roads of continuous bends, so we do the distribution with a small vehicle and a compact crew, already accounted for in the quote.
In El Hierro, almost never. The sea connection has a limited number of slots for heavy vehicles, so a 40-foot container is hard to fit and pushes the cost up without improving the timeframe. Groupage is the natural option: you pay for the actual volume and your load leaves on the first available connection. If you still need exclusivity we will arrange it, warning that the date depends on the ship.
Not if the move is due to a change of residence. The relief exempts used household effects from IGIC and AIEM if you evidence your previous registered address outside the Canaries, register on the island and submit a valued inventory. The DUA is always compulsory. On an island with limited frequencies it is worth closing everything before shipping: a clearance issue is not fixed by the next day's sailing.
