Removals to El Hierro from mainland Spain
Sea freight with a connection from Tenerife to the Port of La Estaca and door-to-door delivery in Valverde, Frontera and El Pinar.
REQUEST A QUOTEA move to El Hierro from the Mainland is the longest route in the archipelago and the one requiring the most planning, because the island has no direct maritime line with the Mainland: cargo always arrives via connection from Tenerife to Puerto de La Estaca, with limited frequencies. It's not a problem if you organize it in advance, and that's the advantage of working with a company whose own base is in Tenerife, which is exactly where the transshipment takes place. At Horizont Atlantic we've had this operation running for over 15 years and we offer a fixed price with the connection already included.
How your move arrives at El Hierro
The move has three phases. First we collect and pack at your mainland home and transport the cargo to the departure port: Cádiz (around 5 days of sailing), Valencia (around 6) or Barcelona (around 6); from inland origins like Madrid or Zaragoza the total is around 9 days. Then, our team receives the shipment in Tenerife and prepares it for the connection to Puerto de La Estaca, in Valverde. Finally, we distribute across the island. The connection frequencies are fewer than to other islands, so the sensible thing is to count on 3 to 4 weeks from signing and to book with a margin, especially in summer.
From which cities do we depart to El Hierro
We pick up door to door at any point on the Mainland, whether from a capital or a small town. For El Hierro we don't publish pages by city of origin because the volume doesn't justify it, but the operation is exactly the same as for other destinations: the land leg takes you to the port that best suits your date —Cádiz, Valencia or Barcelona— and from there the circuit is common. If you want to see the details of how we work from each mainland origin, it's explained in the hub of moves to the Canary Islands.
Groupage, the natural option
For El Hierro we recommend groupage almost always. The island has fewer than 12,000 inhabitants and the maritime connection has limited slots for heavy vehicles: an exclusive 40-foot container is difficult to fit and raises the cost without providing any real schedule advantage. With groupage you pay only for the volume you occupy and your cargo travels on the first available connection. If you're moving a complete house, we can still organize it exclusively, but we'll be clear: the date will depend on ship availability, not on us.
Where we deliver in El Hierro
We cover the three municipalities on the island: Valverde (with Puerto de La Estaca and the Tamaduste area), La Frontera —the El Golfo valley, Tigaday, Las Puntas and Sabinosa— and El Pinar, with La Restinga to the south. The topography is the most demanding in the archipelago: from Puerto de La Estaca to El Golfo there's a huge elevation change over very few kilometers, with roads of continuous curves and steep slopes. All island distribution is done with small vehicle and reduced team, the only way to reach inland houses or residences with sloped access with guarantees. It's calculated within the budget, it's not an extra that appears when unloading.
DUA and exemption for change of residence
The DUA is mandatory to clear merchandise in the Canary Islands and we handle it. If the move is due to a change of residence, used household goods are exempt from IGIC and AIEM through the exemption for change of domicile: you must prove previous registration outside the Canary Islands, register in El Hierro and present a valued inventory. On a small island, finalizing the documentation before shipment is even more important: an incident in the clearance is not resolved with the next departure of the day, but with the one the following week.
What the service includes
We include reinforced maritime packing, disassembly and assembly of furniture, interim storage in Tenerife —key on this route to not depend on the ship and your keys coinciding—, insurance on the declared value and the option to carry your car in the same shipment. About the car, we'll be straightforward: in El Hierro there's no reasonable alternative for public transport between municipalities, so bringing your car within the move is the most sensible and cheapest option.
How much a move to El Hierro costs
You pay for actual volume. An average apartment of around 25 m³ in groupage from the Mainland is in an indicative range of 2,500 to 3,500 €, the highest in the archipelago. The reason is purely logistical and we explain it without beating around the bush: two maritime legs, limited frequencies in the connection and island distribution that requires a small vehicle and more team hours. All of that is included in the fixed quote you receive in 24-48 hours: we don't invoice the connection or the last mile as additional charges later.
If you already live in the Canary Islands
This page covers moves from the Mainland to El Hierro. If you're moving from another island —almost always Tenerife—, the service is that of moves between islands, with the same maritime connection but without the mainland leg. And if you want to compare the rest of the archipelago's destinations, the starting point is the hub of moves to the Canary Islands.
Moves to the rest of the archipelago
If your destination is not El Hierro, we have our own page for each island with its ports, schedules and delivery areas: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma and La Gomera.

It is the longest route in the archipelago. To the peninsular crossing —5 days from Cádiz, 6 from Valencia, 6 from Barcelona or 9 in total from the interior— you must add the connection from Tenerife to Puerto de La Estaca, with more limited frequencies than to other islands. The prudent course is to allow 3 to 4 weeks from the booking and to reserve in advance, especially in summer.
An average flat of 25 m³ in groupage from the mainland falls into an indicative range of €2,500 to €3,500, the highest in the archipelago. The reason is logistical: two sea hops, limited frequencies on the connection and island distribution with a small vehicle. It is all included in the fixed price; we do not invoice the connection afterwards as a surcharge.
No. Freight always arrives via the connection from Tenerife to the Port of La Estaca. For you that means two things: you need to book further in advance, and it helps if whoever organises the removal has a real presence in Tenerife. Our base is there, so the transhipment is supervised by our own team and the load does not change hands.
Yes, we cover all three municipalities: Valverde (including Tamaduste), La Frontera — Tigaday, Las Puntas, Sabinosa and the El Golfo valley — and El Pinar, with La Restinga. These are destinations with very sharp height differences and roads of continuous bends, so we do the distribution with a small vehicle and a compact crew, already accounted for in the quote.
In El Hierro, almost never. The sea connection has a limited number of slots for heavy vehicles, so a 40-foot container is hard to fit and pushes the cost up without improving the timeframe. Groupage is the natural option: you pay for the actual volume and your load leaves on the first available connection. If you still need exclusivity we will arrange it, warning that the date depends on the ship.
Not if the move is due to a change of residence. The relief exempts used household effects from IGIC and AIEM if you evidence your previous registered address outside the Canaries, register on the island and submit a valued inventory. The DUA is always compulsory. On an island with limited frequencies it is worth closing everything before shipping: a clearance issue is not fixed by the next day's sailing.
